Luther and the Reformation

It is appropriate to take a look at the Reformation at this time. "My conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one's conscience is neither safe nor sound. God help me. Amen". That was Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms. "Luther is a drunken German. He will feel differently when he is sober." That is attributed to Pope Leo X. So what were those 95 theses all about and why did they divide Europe ? Come and discuss; you may never think about Halloween the same way again !

Regular Meeting- ’ I’ve mislaid my glasses, but my son’s on holiday’

'I've mislaid my glasses, but my son's on holiday' Reflections, Perceptions, Observations and Experiences of Life in a Care Home. John Reeve, who has spent the last six years as a resident in Bilton House(Free Church care home), will present this subject. After he has done so he will offer five questions from which members of the group will be asked to select one. After a period of silence members will be invited to speak to the one they have selected. Whilst doing so it would be appreciated if members would listen, with respect and understanding, and not interrupt or question the speaker. A short interval of silence will be observed between each speaker. If time permits we could move to a more open discussion. This is a Quaker approach to exploration in groups.

The faith of Charles Darwin

Ian has been impressed by reading of Charles Darwin's beliefs in a book by Nick Spencer called "The Evolution of the West---How Christianity has shaped our values". How was it that Darwin lived by Christian values and did not oppose Christian groups, even after he reasoned that he was an atheist, sort of ?
