The Apostate's Creed - Rethinking Christianity for the C21st - Ben Whitney

Ben writes, ‘All theologies have a context. Mine is the 21st century.

Can I still find some truth in the Christian story, even if, like most people, I no longer believe its historic doctrines or share its faith in a supernatural God? Jesus radically reinterpreted his religious inheritance. Can we learn from him and do the same, or is he too no longer relevant?

This book is an exploration of some phrases from the 8th century Apostles Creed, together with a series of reflections based mainly around Luke's gospel. Is there anything left I can believe in? And what difference does it make?

Ben Whitney is a retired education social worker who also has a postgraduate degree in theology. He was previously a Baptist minister and then a Church of England lay-reader. Ben’s talk this evening is based on his recent book, The Apostate’s Creed. Some copies are available. Please email for a copy to be sent to you.

Galilee Online Group

The Galilee Online Group is a web-based PCN group meeting on the 2nd Sunday of each month. It currently has more than 50 participants in the UK and US. Galilee Online uses Zoom technology for its meetings, beginning with a presentation for approximately 30-45 minutes, and then followed by group discussion, sometimes in small breakout groups, and at other times in one large group. We study topics from theology to current events, with an emphasis on social and economic justice, and we help each other to put our faith into action with resources and sharing of information about current campaigns.

The Imagination as a Key to Unlocking Scripture

Many Christians have been brought up with a reverence for intellectual interpretations of scripture from people with whom they have little in common. The suspicion is that the ‘right answer’ to puzzling scriptures can only be unlocked by the learned. In this lecture, the ‘right answers’ mentality is questioned and the proven worth of experience, insight and imagination celebrated in graphic detail.

John has worked for over 30 years in the areas of music, worship, spirituality and social justice. He conducts workshops and seminars across the globe and, with his colleagues, develops new and accessible liturgical materials. He is an occasional broadcaster and contributor to Radio 4's Thought for the Day.

Thank You For The Rain

"Thank you for the rain" is a feature length documentary provided through the auspices of Christian Aid which focuses on the climate crisis in the lead up to COP 26.

Five years ago Kisilu, a Kenyan farmer, started to use his camera to capture the life of his family, his village and the damages of climate change. When a violent storm throws him and a Norwegian filmmaker together we see him transform from a father, to a community leader and activist on the global stage. Thank You for the Rain is an inspiring and captivating tale of an indefatigable optimist, who nonetheless tests his limits in the fight for a greener world.

Legacy - a dilemma

In our previous meetings, we looked at our human and Christian responsibilities for the planet and based some of our reflections on Laudato Si. For this question, raised by one of our members, we shall probably explore some aspects of legacy, inheritance and social justice wondering who are our children as it is usually children that parents leave their inheritance to. Is this right? Is this just? Is this equitable?... We shall explore some of the principles identified in Fratelli Tutti, the 2020 encyclical letter from Pope Francis.
