How do we account for the existence of religion? Many in the West deem religion quite irrelevant. Marx dismissed it as the opium of the people, while Freud thought religion a universal obsessional neurosis. But obsessional or not, it is hard to deny that throughout human history religion appears to be well-nigh universal. Atheism is less our default setting and more the result of rejecting religious beliefs previously accepted. But how do we explain the roots of religion ? Naturalistically, or does religion itself require a religious explanation ?- Start Date:
