Hugh’s experience of facing his own death aged 17 led him to train as a doctor. As a consultant gut doctor he was fully involved in diagnosing cancers and offering choices to those so afflicted. He also worked in ITU where death was common.

In his 40s, he trained in depth as a person-centred counsellor and this expanded his commitment to exploring emotional aspects around facing death. He then moved to hospice work for 10 years.

When death is predicted, he believes that we can all take control of our own dying in many ways – and can help to make it a gentle, natural and spiritual event.

The evening will be in the form of a discussion. Some questions raised may include:

  • What and when would you like to ‘know’?
  • Might you wish to share such information – when and with whom?
  • How meaningful is it to ask ‘how long’?
  • What are the pros and cons of levels of pain relief and sedation?
  • Home or hospice?
  • I don’t know what to say.
  • Food. Drink – and death rattle.
  • What is a ‘good death’ and how can we aim for this?
  • Assisted Dying.
  • Sorry, thank-you and I love you.

Lots of questions but whose view matters? Who is – or can be – in control?
