Malvern Group Meeting – Secular Morality - Philip Veasey

We have evolved to be predominantly a collaborative species and, with or without a God’s help, we have needed to develop moral codes to guide people. The need for our species to be better at collaboration has never been greater if we are to survive. The Secular Morality Project is a hopeful response to this desperate need and aims to develop “personal” standards of behaviour that can be understood and shared by all human beings, theist, agnostic or atheist.

The National Secular Society defines the term ‘secular’ as the strict separation of the state from religious institutions and the equality of people of different religions and beliefs before the law. This is not an atheist position but, in fact, one that protects religious freedom. The Secular Morality Project seeks to extend secularity to morality. It does not deny that some of what religions say is part of mankind's store of wisdom. It looks forward to those ideas being identified and expressed in a way that can help us all. It does, however, require that such contributions are subjected to the same examination and testing as non-religious contributions and that they prove themselves useful and shareable.

Philip was the chair of West London Humanists for several years and initiated the project there. He will explain where it has got to and his hopes for its future.

This meeting will also be broadcast via zoom. Please email for details.
