Mary, Mother of God, Mother of the Poor - Helen Stanton

Mary, the mother of Jesus has sometimes been used as a figure to oppress women and ordinary Christian disciples. She has also sometimes been ignored, denying the importance of an / the outstanding female figure of the Christian faith. Drawing upon the Magnificat and theologies of liberation from throughout the world, Helen Stanton will explore an understanding of Mary as a prophet of God’s reign, and model of discipleship whose yes to God brought and brings the life of God into the world in Jesus Christ.

Helen Stanton is a theologian, educator and writer, who currently works as Warden of Holland House in Cropthorne, having previously trained people for ordained and lay ministries for more than 25 years. She was the editor in the West of Tissa Balasuriya’s Mary and Human Liberation, the publication of which brought about the reversal of Fr Tissa’s excommunication for his arguments in that book.
