Luke Devine is Senior Lecturer in Humanities at the University of Worcester, Head of Department for History, Sociology, and Politics, Co-Course Leader for Sociology, and module leader for each of the university’s Politics modules. Luke’s teaching specialisms include sociology of religion, political philosophy, antisemitism, Freud and psychoanalytic sociology, and Jewish history and literature. Luke’s research is primarily focused on fin de siècle Anglo-Jewish literature, particularly Amy Levy, and on representations of Shekhinah in Jewish mystical literature. Luke recently edited a new version of Amy Levy’s Collected Writings (2023) for The Library of the Jewish People.

In this talk, Luke will discuss Anglo-Jewish communities in England prior to the expulsion in 1290. The talk will cover the legal status of Anglo-Jews and the role of the Crown, the dynamics of medieval anti-Judaism and antisemitism, and local primary sources available in places such as Hereford and Worcester that can help to build a picture of Anglo-Jewish life before Edward I’s Expulsion Edict.
