Although a surprising number of biblical scholars are at pains to deny the very idea of a biblical mythology, Prof Wyatt will explore the reasoning behind his view that the idea of a mythless religion is an oxymoron.
Nicolas Wyatt spent his academic career in Scotland, teaching at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, with short spells in Stirling and Ibadan (Nigeria). He received his Ph.D. from Glasgow University in 1977 and D.Litt. from Edinburgh in 2008, and is Emeritus Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Religions at Edinburgh University. His main research interests are the religious texts of the Late Bronze Age from Ugarit (Syria), the reception of ‘Canaanite’ tradition in ancient Israel, royal ideology and cosmology in both areas, and the problem (as some see it!) of myth in the Old Testament. In addition to many articles, he has written seven books and co-edited a further three. Prof Wyatt is perhaps best known to the population at large as a presenter in the recent BBC series “The Bible’s Buried Secrets”.
