RECLAIMING THE INHERITANCE OF JESUS with Marcus Borg
Friday 11 November 2011 — Saturday 12 November 2011
Jesus and Christianity have often been domesticated by Christian theology and cultural accommodation. The weekend seeks to reclaim the radical significance of Jesus from its cultural captivity by exploring a historical and metaphorical approach to seeing Jesus, God, and Christianity.

FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2011 at 7.30 pm (7.00pm Coffee and registration):
āSpeaking Christianā - Reclaiming Christian Language
SATURDAY 12 November 2011, 10.00 am ā 4.00 pm (9.15am Coffee and Registration):
Lecture 1 āGod and Atheism, recent reverberationsā - Recent best-selling books on atheism point to a contemporary crisis in the meaning of the word āGodā ā its referent. What do we imagine when we think or hear or use the word āGodā? The lecture explores two very different referents of the word āGod,ā one completely vulnerable to atheist critique, the other not.
Lecture 2 āGod and Jesus, original impulseā - As historical figure, Jesus was radically centred in God. Christians ever since have spoken of him as one who reveals God ā indeed, as the decisive revelation of God. What do we learn about God by looking at Jesus?
Lecture 3 āGod and Jesus, contemporary resonancesā - What does it mean to take the God of Jesus seriously today? A sketch of the Christian life as involving a twofold focus and twofold transformation.
